Ruby Retired

We are very sad to report that shortly before the Slovakian border Ruby gave one last backfire and ground to a halt by the side of the road. We had had a lovely day in Poland had tackled the first time trial and were looking forward to the rest of Europe. Unfortunately we had been having some engine lubrication problems and the cam shaft finally seized. We put the car on a truck to Koscice and finally to a garage where we spent until 3am. taking it apart. We realised that this was going to be a huge job but still thought we would be able to carry on. However we could not get any parts sent from Canada until Monday, they would arrive Wednesday and it would take at least three days to complete the job. So with much disappoint all round we have rented a car and will continue with the rally into Paris. We will now help the other crews by carrying their spare parts etc. and helping out where we can. We feel somewhat vindicated that we managed to cross Asia and were on the home strait when Ruby failed . C’est la vie!

So sorry to hear your news – poor Ruby and you. Enjoy the rest of the rally in your helping capacity. Was on SaltSpring yesterday – John and Auntie Glad had a weed and arbutus leaves cleaned off. Cheers, Derrick and Pip.

Sounds as if you have had lots of highs as well as the lows. Good for you for carrying on to Paris. You are troupers!

Thank you both. We are carrying on but it is hard without the car. However it was 35C here yesterday and an air conditioned car was luxury. !

I’m very sorry to read that Ruby gave up. However I am curious to find out the reason of the lubrication problem. Disappointing to say the least of not being able to get the needed part in time for Ruby to continue. I hope the 2 of you enjoy the remainder of the journey to Parish helping others. You guys are my HERO’s and that includes Ruby!

So sorry to hear that Ruby gave up her valiant effort. Lubrication seems to be a common problem with aging😀 You are truly amazing to have taken on this gruelling race once again. Paris and wee smiling faces will make your hearts sing? Well done👍👍

Nuts! You guys came so far. But you did travel through what was probably the most interesting and challenging part of the rally. Good job!
And I still love that car!! 🙂

Oh no – that’s so disappointing for you. Still, as Lang says you’ve done the most interesting part in Ruby. Enjoy the rest of the rally. Hire cars are not the end of the world as we all know! XX

Really sorry to hear your news – I know exactly how you must be feeling. I hope you rescued the whisky bottle before the car was towed away! Rhubarb and Custard is still in Kazan.

Thanks Neil, it is an awful feeling. Have opted to stay with the rally but it isn’t easy watching everyone check out and in each day. Will we see you in and Richad in Paris, I do hope so.

So sorry to hear this, when you were doing so well – but were just waiting for something to happen once that stupid report guy said the Nash was unflappable = asking for trouble indeed.. Surprised to hear it’s a lubrication problem and hope to help to check it out when you get back. Have a fulfilling time being your usual good Samaritan selves and enjoy the trip to Paris et al.

Thank you Joan, we are so disappointed that we had got so far and to fail in the last week has been difficult. Anyway in the grand scheme of life this is a silly hiccup. Will look forward to seeing you when we get home.
